Our story
In 2020, the journey of Calame House Homestead began when we transitioned from city life to our family property. Starting small with personal gardens, goats, chickens, and an abundance of roosters, our journey towards self-sustainability unfolded gradually. As parents deeply committed to our children's well-being, ensuring the quality of their food became a paramount concern. Struggling to find clean meat options locally, especially as a family of seven engaged in homesteading and homeschooling, prompted us to take matters into our own hands.
Thus, the idea of offering our preferred clean meat, particularly chicken, through a business venture emerged. Central to our ethos is the preservation of nature's purity. Our chickens are raised on a diet devoid of soy, corn, and GMOs, never receiving antibiotics, and enjoying pasture-raised conditions. By upholding these standards, we not only safeguard the health of our own children but also extend these premium options to our community.
Our process
We procure our chicks from a reputable Texas supplier, ensuring they are promptly hatched and shipped to us. Upon arrival at the post office, we prioritize collecting them immediately and swiftly transport them home. Once there, we settle them into the brooder to warm up, providing essential nourishment and hydration. Our daily routine revolves around caring for these chicks diligently, including cleaning their food and water receptacles, and showering them with affection, a task our children eagerly participate in. As they mature, they transition to our spacious chicken tractors, generously sized to accommodate their comfort, and moved daily to ensure access to fresh forage. As they continue to grow, they graduate to a fenced play yard, rotated daily for optimal grazing. While we'd love to grant them free range, this meticulous process ensures their safety and well-being until it's time for them to be humanely processed and packaged.
